Smos & Baby Bee: Party Flyers And More. Reminiscences Of A Unique Era In Belgian Nightlife Culture. (1993–2010) Throughout 326 flyers and many stories from the personal archives of Baby Bee, Smos and a bunch of friends and fellow DJs, the story of the legendary duo was recreated. 

Sad news shook up our scene in April 2020: Smos had passed away. Aged 53, the Antwerp based DJ was a key figure of our Belgian nightlife scene. As yin to yang, Smos was connected to Baby Bee. The inseparable duo – who have been lovers as well – has rocked dance floors all over Belgium and abroad for 20 years of which 18 as resident DJs in Café d’Anvers and four in the Motion room in Fuse in Brussels. Having started their DJ career in the early nineties, their story is closely linked with the beginnings of Belgian DJ culture and the electronic music scene. 

Smos & Baby Bee were prominently rocking the electronic music scene since its dawn, shortly after the infamous second summer of love in the UK during the late 1980s and the rising of a new youth culture, a pivotal point in music history when under the spell of XTC a large audience became enthralled by the exciting new style of music coming from American cities such as Detroit and Chicago. They were DJing all over Belgium and through their genuine approach and straight forward mentality bringing together scenes from Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp or Wallonia. They were a DJ duo, a constellation nowadays well known but at the time truly rare. And not to forget, Baby Bee was a female acting in a mostly male world. The visual archive presented in this publication generates an important cache of a creative culture that has been going through ups and downs, but is still very much alive and kicking to this very day. The book wishes to commemorate Smos, who is missed by many and remains in our hearts forever. 

Op 23 april 2020 werden we wakker met droevig nieuws: Smos was overleden. Op 53-jarige leeftijd was de Antwerpse dj een spilfiguur in ons Belgische nachtleven. Zoals yin tot yang, was Smos verbonden met Baby Bee. Het onafscheidelijke duo – dat ook geliefden zijn geweest – rockt 20 jaar dansvloeren in heel België en in het buitenland, waarvan 18 als resident dj’s in Café d’Anvers en vier in de Motion room in Fuse in Brussel. Ze begonnen hun dj-carrière aan het begin van de jaren negentig en hun verhaal is nauw verbonden met het ontstaan van de Belgische dj-cultuur en de elektronische muziekscene.

(1993–2010). Aan de hand van 326 flyers en vele verhalen uit de persoonlijke archieven van Baby Bee, Smos en een stel vrienden en collega-dj’s wordt het verhaal van het legendarische duo verteld.

Smos & Baby Bee waren prominent aanwezig in de elektronische muziekscene bij het ontstaan ervan, kort na de beruchte tweede summer of love in het Verenigd Koninkrijk eind jaren tachtig en de opkomst van een nieuwe jeugdcultuur, een cruciaal punt in de muziekgeschiedenis toen jongeren onder invloed van XTC in de ban raakten van de opwindende nieuwe muziekstijl die overwaaide uit Amerikaanse steden als Detroit en Chicago. Smos & Baby Bee draaiden overal in België en brachten door hun oprechte aanpak en rechttoe rechtaan mentaliteit scenes samen uit Brussel, Gent, Antwerpen of Wallonië. Ze waren een dj-duo, een constellatie die tegenwoordig alom bekend is maar destijds echt zeldzaam. En niet te vergeten, Baby Bee was een vrouw die acteerde in een voornamelijk mannelijke wereld.

Het visuele archief dat in deze publicatie wordt gepresenteerd, genereert een belangrijke cache van een creatieve cultuur die ups en downs heeft doorgemaakt, maar die tot op de dag van vandaag springlevend is. Het boek wil ook Smos herdenken, die door velen wordt gemist en voor altijd in ons hart blijft.
