Hector was the first ratronaut sent into space by the French space program on 22 February 1961, launched aboard a Véronique rocket to study the neurological effects of spaceflight on living bodies. Electrodes implanted in his skull transmitted data during the mission, making his small body part of the vast machinery of scientific progress. Unlike the celebrated astronauts who followed, Hector’s journey was largely anonymous and invisible – a quiet experiment carried beyond the atmosphere. Yet the image feels oddly transcendent: a rat in a tiny space suit, ascending as an angel into the dark to seemingly dissolve into the universe itself. Somewhere between science and sacrifice, Hector became a symbol of fragile life meeting the infinite, becoming a small entity entering cosmic harmony.
