IN LIMBO’S MUSIC THAT MATTERS LIST 2018
Best Of lists are very unnatural for a being IN perpetual LIMBO.
Nevertheless, what follows is a small, free-associative selection of music that mattered in 2018 (and beyond), be it either played in non-stop, loopy, mantric manner, or savoured in small amounts.
Albums, tracks, clips, labels, reissues in NO particular order.
To happy organised future chaos!
Lucretia Dalt – Tar + Atmospheres Touch (album Anticlines) – RVGN Intl
+ Jan Jelinek remix
Dr. C. Stein – La Bombe Plastique – Artificial Dance Records
SHXCXCHCXSH – SHULULULU – Avian Records
Sarah Davachi – Evensong (album Gave in Rest) – Ba Da Bing Records
Franz Zwartjes – Tapes 1 – Trunk Records
At first I found this one highly irritating, to say the least. But then, because I-don’t-know-what obscure mechanisms in body and brain, it morphed into my soothing mantra of the year. Must be the record I’ve put on the most in 2018.
Paper Dollhouse – The Sky Looks Different Here – MoonDome Records
Pablo’s Eye – Bardo For Pablo – Stroom
Ursula K. Le Guin and Todd Barton – Music and Poetry of the Kesh – RVGN Intl
Came to this record through an introductory lecture of her writings. Amazingly intriguing and visionary sonic document of the Kesh people, not in the least because they are fictional, and so even the language of the songs is an imaginary and invented one.
Kelly Moran – Helix (album Ultraviolet) – Warp
Tomaga – Music For Visual Disorders – Meakusma Records
Mika Vainio + Ryoji Ikeda + Alva Noto – Movement 2 (+ album Live 2002) – Noton
Cucina Povera – Hilja – Night School Records
The Other People Place – Eyecontact (repress album Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café) – Warp
Vakula – Metaphors LP – Leleka Records
Kale Plankieren – Dutch Cassette Rarities 1981 – 1987 Vol.2 – Knekelhuis Records
Azura – Paraiso ’89 – World Building
J. Mascis – I Went Dust (album Elastic Days) – Sub Pop
Will I walk
Will I drift
Will I stop
A.E. Bizottság – Szerelem, Szerelem (album Kalandra Fel!!) – Start Recording
Happiest 2nd hand find of the year: the vinyl version of this song, in a sympathetic shop in Budapest. Most beautiful song about love and how it’s basically every time the same shit over and over again. Totally hooked to this one. And, with a bit of practice, a big sing-along song too (SCREAM it out)!
