Jazzbelle’s 16th session for WAV is a tribute to Philip Catherine, a Belgian guitarist who has been at the forefront of the European jazz scene since the sixties. He studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and started playing professionally when he was only 17. In his long and successful music career he worked together with Dexter Gordon, Chat Baker (with whom he recorded 6 albums), Tom Harrell, Larry Coryell, Lou Bennett, Kenny Drew, Stéphane Grappelli, Charles Mingus, Karin Krog, Paul Kuhn, Michael Mantler, Charlie Mariano, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Miroslav Vitous, Jean Luc Ponty and many other jazz legends. Mingus gave him the nickname ‘young Django’ and said that he ‘plays things that cannot be heard by any other guitarist in the world’. His impressive playing technique, unique improvisational style and the highly emotional lyricism of expression have been admired and greatly  influential on the jazz scene.
