This year marks the third edition of the Queer Lab organized by the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival. Through this platform, the festival aims to support the artistic development of up-and-coming queer artists. During a ten-day residency held at De Studio this summer, five queer artists — Anne, Becky, David, Mags, and Milana — explored their individual art forms, which ranged from large-scale pen drawings to fashion design, from drag concerts to off-beat comedy. They engaged with each other’s work and the larger Antwerp queer arts scene.

Maïté speaks with Elioa Steffens, the mentor of the Queer Lab, and David Salazar Bianchi, an artist in residence, about their work and the process behind the Queer Lab.

Artist and educator Elioa Steffen (she/her), a co-founder and Co-Coordinator of In Pursuit of Otherwise Possibilities, Queer Performance Pedagogy and Feedback (IPOP), an artistic educational research project based in Amsterdam.

David Salazar Bianchi (he/they) is a Guatemalan artist based in Berlin who creates large-scale drawings exploring memory, identity, and belonging. His work reflects the influence of his homeland’s landscapes, spirituality, family ties, and the impact of living and studying in Europe.
